Lower Silesian Science Festival was initiated in 1998 and is a non-profit scientific event organized annually for several days, end of September in Wroclaw and in two-days October sessions in nine province towns (Jelenia Gora, Legnica, Walbrzych, Zabkowice Slaskie, Zgorzelec, Dzierzoniow, Glogow, Bystrzyca Klodzka, and Lubin). The festival is organized by all the universities of Wrocław, institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences and non-academic institutions. Formally the Festival is embeded at the University of Wrocław. The festival is addressed to all people interested in science, technology, culture and art.
Main aims of the Lower Silesian Science Festival are: showing young people that scientific work can be an interesting job by demonstrating the working methods; presenting young, talented educators like young scientists, PhD students and high school students; opening specialist, normally inaccessible, laboratories; stimulating interest in science and showing its achievements in an accessible way; preparing a rich program in the scope of engineering and natural sciences in order to promote studying those subjects; building a program plane supporting the work of a teacher; teaching through fun. Since ten years at least five hundred thousands of visitors, particularly young people, have visited the lecture halls and laboratories of Wroclaw research institutions during the Lower Silesian Science Festival.
There is an increasing interest in research, but scientific problems are difficult to understand, therefore this dialogue between Science and Society is crucial for the appreciation of the importance of research among the general public.
Another important objective of the Festival is to make the community of Wroclaw and Lower Silesia aware of the fact that knowledge is the center of the most important civilization processes and that our place in the United Europe will depend on the education level of the society. LSSF promotes Wroclaw as a city of research and art, and Lower Silesia - as a region with tremendous potential.
